Have terms such as brain fog, thought paralysis, dizziness become a part of your daily parlance? If the answer is, “Yes", then I would say, "Congratulations”, your journey to happiness has indeed begun. Mental fatigue wears us down more than physical exertion. It could stem from so many sources, hectic life, too many responsibilities to juggle with, pent up emotions, trauma and the list is endless. However, the moment the realisation dawns that something up there in the mind is perhaps not okay, that very moment, things begin to look up. Afterall the first step towards rectification, is acceptance that something is amiss.

The next obvious question is, what can be done to re energise the weary mind. The answer is simple: allow some happiness to come in. Now this is easier said than done, as the mind is attuned to look out for existential threats and eliminate them. Yes, you got that right overthinking is, in a way mind's natural tendency, if not controlled. However, the good news is that the mind can be trained to look out for positivity and happiness and in that sense allow the body to release good hormones such as serotonin, dopamine and so on. It takes a simple technique called 'Happiness Pockets'. The technique has been named using analogy very similar to sweet or savoury delights that are prepared in small sizes to fit into children’s little snack boxes. The feeling of being in a happiness pocket is akin to the one that children experience when they open the snack box to find their favourite food!

So how do we create these Happiness Pockets? It’s easy. List down the things that give you happiness.  One billion dollars would I think feature on most people's lists, but we'll have to do it a little differently and more practically.  These 'things' must be doable, something that you can easily find around yourself. It could be talking to a friend, a neighbour, watering plants, listening to your favourite song, maybe watching funny scenes from your favourite film. Now once that list is ready just allow these activities/things/tasks or experiences to seep in your daily life. For instance, if you like to catch up with friends. Take 10 minutes every day to call up someone close to you. If you relish tea and a good read, create a small book nook in some well-lit corner of your home, sits there for few minutes, read a verse or too and enjoy your tea. If you like gardening, take 5 minutes every day to engage with your plants: tilling soil in a flower pot or too.

Once this practice turns into a habit and there are about 4-5 happiness pockets each day, you will find yourself feeling happier. In the longer run you will see that your life feels more fulfilling and you will have more time to indulge in things you like. As they say, "Like begets like", a happy mind attracts more happiness and hence more energy and positivity. Try it !
