HER HEALTH , HER POWER: IMPORTANCE OF WOMENS FITNESS
Taking control of one’s health is a form of self- empowerment. It fosters a sense of autonomy and self-respect, enabling an individual to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives. Hence I believe everyone in general and women in particular must prioritize their health. It’s essential as it transforms women into stronger, more resilient, and more capable individuals, enhancing their quality of life and enabling them to contribute positively to their families and communities. Women no doubt have extra responsibilities thus being focused on being healthier through proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, they can have higher energy levels and improved stamina, enabling them to handle their responsibilities and pursuits more effectively.
Women are more prone to mental diseases. Attention to mental health, including stress management, mental health screenings, and healthy lifestyle choices, promotes emotional stability, reduces the risk of mental health issues and enhances a cognitive function. Healthier women are better equipped to care for their families and others. They have the physical and mental energy required to fulfill their roles as caregivers without compromising their own wellbeing.
Women in India face barriers that can prevent them from prioritizing their health. Traditional gender roles often prioritize the health and wellbeing of male family members over females. Women are frequently expected to sacrifice their own needs for the sake of families. Economic dependence on male family members can restrict women’s ability to spend money on their own health needs. Lack of financial autonomy further exacerbate this issue. Women also bear a disproportionate share of domestic duties and caregiving responsibilities, leaving them with little time or energy to attend to their own health needs. Some women might feel that spending time on personal fitness is selfish, especially if they are expected to prioritize family responsibilities over personal well- being. Without support and encouragement from the family and community, women might lack the motivation or permission to engage in regular physical activity. There can also be social stigma associated with women exercising, especially in public. In some cultures, women might be discouraged from wearing exercise clothing or participating is sports. Personal safety concerns can also deter women from exercising outdoors, especially in areas with high crime rates or poor lighting.
It the need of the hour to educate women about the benefits of regular exercise through health campaigns and community programs. There’s an urgent requirement to develop safe and accessible spaces for women to exercise, such as women-only gyms, parks and fitness centers. Implement policies that promote work-life balance such as flexible working hours and parental leave, allowing women more time for physical activity. Fitness facilities and programs must be made affordable through, subsidies, discounts, or community- sponsored initiatives. Local activities and group events can be organized to encourage social support and motivation. . Family can play a phenomenal role by sharing domestic responsibilities, freeing up time for women to exercise. Highlighting female fitness role models in the media to inspire and motivate women can also be a game changer.
